SHARE Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support

SHARE is a pregnancy and infant loss organization based in St. Charles, Missouri. They've been around since 1977 and they've done some great advocacy work on behalf of bereaved families. I have to confess, I've only just recently discovered them, though.

Among other accomplishments, they've helped parents who've experienced a loss remove their names from “unwelcome” mailing lists. Before I had my first couple of miscarriages, I'd excitedly signed up for all the free magazines, baby newsletters and baby coupons I could. Of course this meant after I lost my babies, I was still deluged with mail that made me extremely unhappy. (My husband, bless him has been covertly throwing away diaper and formula ads for years so I wouldn't be upset by them.) Still, it would have been better to get off the mailing lists entirely.

SHARE has also developed a hospital packet for bereaved families, worked on creating a policy of burial for babies who had been miscarried, worked with grieving siblings, created a website, wrote books, testified before various government hearings (both local and national) and pregnancy and infant loss issues and advocated to have October 15 be recognized as pregnancy and infant loss remembrance day. The list is goes on and is impressive.

Their website offers a catalog of resources, message boards and an online chat. Additionally, they will provide parents with an information packet. These are available free of charge and paid for using contributions and fund raising. These packets can be mailed or emailed. The organization has an “Angel of Hope” statue at their Missouri location and there are other Angel of Hope memorial gardens around the country. SHARE also publishes a newsletter. The website also includes a store where you can purchase a variety of books on pregnancy and infant loss as well as general books on grieving.

The SHARE website has many resources and is easy to navigate. The support resources tab has a lot of good information including information on memorials and memory making. The organization also provides training for professionals so the can effectively support families who have lost a baby. Additionally, they sponsor SHARE walks around the country to raise money for pregnancy and infant loss awareness. I would definitely recommend checking out SHARE's website.
