Exterior Home Maintenance

Exterior Home Maintenance
There are many different types of siding for the exterior surface of a home. In different parts of the country, different exteriors are dominant. For instance, in the southern part of the United States, concrete and stucco are very common. In the northern sections, brick and siding are more prevalent. Some homes have multiple surfaces, both concrete and siding. No matter what type of surface surrounds the exterior of a home, it does require some form of maintenance.

Spring is on the way in most parts of the country and is a great time to take a look at the exterior of your home to ascertain any damage or wear. If there is aluminum or vinyl siding, maintenance can be as easy as just a thorough washing. Using a pressure washer will make this job a lot easier and quicker. Make repairs as you see them so that the siding is always in excellent shape.

A brick exterior usually wears very well. It can also easily be washed to remove built up dirt and grime. Make sure to replace any worn out grout that is seen.

Concrete and stucco exteriors probably require the most maintenance. They will need a fresh coat of paint from time to time as weather conditions will eventually fade the color and wear on the paint. This is a big job that is usually done by contractors. It is also a messy job. A home owner can do this job themselves by renting a professional paint sprayer. It is well worth the money for the job at hand. At least two coats of paint will need to be applied which can be done in one weekend with a sprayer. If a paint sprayer is used, it is important to cover and tape the windows in order to protect them from the paint. It is also advisable to avoid spraying on a windy day. Move any objects away from the house including vehicles to protect from the over spray. After painting the bulk of the home with a sprayer, it will be necessary to paint all of the trim, including window trim, with a paint roller or brush.

An essential part of home ownership is maintenance whether it is interior or exterior. Spring is a great time to do this when the weather is comfortable. Getting it done early in the season will leave you plenty of time to enjoy the coming summer months.
