Target Heart Rate Calculator



When you exercise, you want to get your heart rate into a range where it has to do a reasonable amount of work, but not too much. You want to aim for your "target heart rate". This gives you a workout that isn't too easy, but that is safe as well.

There are two target heart rates used by trainers. The first rate is used when a person first begins to exercise, and their heart is not very strong yet. This is your BEGINNING heart rate. The second rate is used when the person has been exercising for a few weeks and is into a routine with the exercise. This is the INTERMEDIATE heart rate.

How Does This Work?
To start with, this form determines your MAXIMUM healthy heart rate. This is the number 220 minus your age. So a 30 year old person would have a maximum of 220-30 or 190 beats per minute heartrate.

Next, when you first start to exercise you only want to reach 60% of that rate. So 60% of 190 is 114 beats per minute heartrate.

When you are further along in your exercise routine and are ready to take on more difficult levels, your target heartrate is 80% of your maximum. So 80% of 190 is 152 beats per minute.
