Welcome to the January 19th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!


Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Japanese voice actor Toshiyuki Hosokawa passed away on Friday, January 14, 2011 at the age of 70 from an acute subdural hematoma. He provided the voice of Tohru Rikiishi in Tomorrow's Joe and Tomorrow's Joe 2.
  • FUNimation has announced that the company began simulcasting the Fractale anime series on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 11:45 a.m. EST. According to the company, the series will be simulcast by FUNimation "in addition to third-party streaming partners."
  • Right Stuf, Inc. and Nozomi Entertainment have announced they will be releasing the Antique Bakery DVD Collection on April 5, 2011. The set will feature all twelve episodes of the series with Japanese audio and English language subtitles. The on-disc extras will include the clean opening and closing, live event coverage, and an interview with AKB48 member Tomomi Kasai. The set will be packaged in a collectors' art box, and will include a booklet featuring character bios, quick facts, featured desserts, and two interviews with all four lead voice actors and the creator of the manga.
  • More cast members have been announced for the English dub of Arrietty: The Borrower. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett are providing the voices for Arrietty's parents. David Henrie and Carol Burnett are providing the voices for human "beans."
  • It is being reported that Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to produce an American live-action film of Death Note. It is also being said that Shane Black has been hired to direct the film, and that the script will be written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.
  • Aniplex of America has announced a premiere event for the release of the Kara no Kyoukai - the Garden of Sinners anime films on February 5, 2011, at San Francisco's New People Center. Hikaru Kondo and Atsuhiro Iwakami, the producers of the film, will attend the event and participate in a discussion panel. The first, second, and seventh films in the series will be screened to promote the February 8th release of the Blu-ray box set.
  • Viz Media has announced that MAR anime series is available for streaming at the company's website, as well as at Hulu.com. Both VizAnime.com and Hulu will stream the first five subtitled episodes of the series for free. Additional episodes will launch each Monday, and each episode will be free.
  • Section23 has announced their releases for April 2011. Special A Complete Collection will be released on DVD on April 5, Needless Collection 2 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 12, Clannad: After Story will be released on DVD on April 19, and Asylum Session will be released on DVD on April 26.
  • Section23 has announced that the company has to indefinitely postpone the Blu-ray release of the first volume of Guin Saga, due to circumstances beyond their control. However, the first DVD release of this series is unaffected; it will still be released on March 29, 2011 as scheduled.
  • FUNimation has made a change in their release plans for the upcoming releases of Eden of the East the Movie I: The King of Eden and Ga-Rei Zero. Instead of having stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray releases, they will now be released as DVD/Blu-ray combo sets.
  • Sentai Filmworks has announced that the company has acquired the license for the Infinite Stratos anime series. At this time, the company has not said how they will be releasing the series.
  • Sentai Filmworks and online retailer Right Stuf have launched a Clannad After Story upgrade program. Customers who have already purchased the English subtitled-only releases of title to mail their copies back to Right Stuf to upgrade to the upcoming new bilingual release. Customers who purchased the sub only volumes can upgrade to the box set for US$20, and fans who only purchased one of these volumes can upgrade for US$35.
