Welcome to the November 16th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!


Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Japanese voice actor Ken Yamaguchi passed away on October 24, 2011 at the age of 55 due to illness. His credits included providing voices in Fist of the North Star, Dragon Ball Z, Zatch Bell, Megazone 23, and Marmalade Boy.
  • The Waterloo Festival of Animated Cinema has announced that it will be screening the Recollections of a Certain Pilot anime film on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. The festival is taking place November 17-20, 2011 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada.
  • Sentai Filmworks has announced the English dub cast for The World God Only Knows; the first season of the series is being released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in January 2012. Chris Patton is Keima Katsuragi, Luci Christian is Elsie, Kaytha Coker is Ayumi Takahara, Hilary Haag is Mio Aoyama and Shiori Shiomiya, Melissa Davis is Sora Asuka, Brittney Karbowski is Kanon Nakagawa, Shelley Calene-Black is Mari Katsuragi, Elizabeth Bunch is Miss Nikaido, Serena Varghese is Chihiro Kosaka and Lime, Kalob Kartinez is Morita, Chris Hutchison is Mio's Father, Chris Ayres is Mr. Kodama, and Monica Rial is Yuri. Steven Foster is directing the dub.
  • The Waterloo Festival of Animated Cinema has announced that it will screen Makoto Shinkai's Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. The festival is taking place November 17-20, 2011 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada.
  • The Downtown Independent movie theater in Los Angeles will be screening the Redline anime film from December 2 through December 8, 2011. Tickets for the screenings are now available for pre-order.
  • Ushicon has announced that anime director Junichi Sato will be a guest at their upcoming convention. Sato worked on the early seasons of Sailor Moon, Princess Tutu, Ojamajo Doremi, and Pretear; in addition, he co-created Aria, Tamayura, and Umi Monogatari ~Anata ga Ite Kureta Koto~. Ushicon is taking place February 3-5, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
  • The Murfreesboro Anime & Comic Con has announced that their next convention is taking place January 21-22, 2012 at the Clarion Hotel in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The convention runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, and from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. All access members will have longer hours for extra events.
  • FUNimation has announced that the first set of One Piece episodes are now available for digital download on the Sony Video Unlimited store on the PLAYSTATION Network (as well as Sony Entertainment Network) and in Microsoft's Zune Marketplace.
  • Section23 has announced their slate of releases for February 2012. Xam'd: Lost Memories Complete Collection will be released on DVD and Blu-ray disc in English and Japanese with English subtitles on February 7, 2012. Hell Girl: Three Vessels Complete Collection will be released on DVD in Japanese with English subtitles on February 14, 2012. Broken Blade Complete Collection will be released on DVD and Blu-ray disc in English and Japanese with English subtitles on February 21, 2012. A Channel Complete Collection will be released on DVD in Japanese with English subtitles on February 28, 2012.
  • Anime-zing! has announced that anime voice actors Robert Axelrod and Sonny Strait will be guests at their 2012 convention. Axelrod's credits include Digimon, Robotech, Akira, and Cowboy Bebop. Strait's credits include Dragon Ball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, and Lupin III. Anime-zing! is taking place June 1-3, 2012 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Davenport, Iowa.
  • The Animaze international animation film festival in Montreal will be screening the Redline, First Squad, and No Longer Human anime films during their festival, which is taking place November 18-20, 2011. Redline is screening on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at 6:15 p.m. First Squad is screening on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. No Longer Human is screening on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 9:00 p.m. All three films are competing in the festival's international film contest.
  • GKids has announced that the company will be screening 15 Studio Ghibli films that were produced between 1984 and 2008 from December 16, 2011 through January 12, 2012 at the IFC Center in New York City. The films in this series will be screened on new 35mm prints in both subbed and dubbed formats. The films being screened as part of this series are: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (subtitled and dubbed), Castle in the Sky (subtitled only), My Neighbor Totoro (subtitled and dubbed), Kiki's Delivery Service (subtitled and dubbed), Only Yesterday (subtitled only), The Ocean Waves (subtitled and digital only), Porco Rosso (subtitled and dubbed), Pom Poko (subtitled and dubbed), Whisper of the Heart (subtitled and dubbed), Princess Mononoke (subtitled and dubbed), My Neighbors the Yamadas (subtitled and dubbed), Spirited Away (subtitled and dubbed), The Cat Returns (subtitled and dubbed), Howl's Moving Castle (dubbed only), and Ponyo (dubbed only).
  • Media Blasters has announced that the company will be re-releasing the Kite anime on Blu-ray Disc; it will be available as both a general release and as an 18+ uncut edition from Kitty Media. The 60-minute Blu-ray Disc will feature both episodes in Japanese and English. The Blu-ray is currently scheduled to be released on February 28, 2012.
  • Anime News Network is reporting that Media Blasters will be releasing the entire first season of the Squid Girl anime series on Blu-ray Disc on March 13, 2012. This bilingual Blu-ray Disc release comes with all twelve episodes of the season and is priced at US$59.99.
