3:10 to Yuma (2007) If there were an award for Most Over-rated, I'd say that 3:10 to Yuma would be the most deserving winner. A Secretarial Fantasy Office workers need fairy tales too! After a lifetime of being Miss Goody-Two-Shoes, Tess McGill takes control of her destiny. An early example of identity theft. Atonement (2007) Atonement, based on a novel by Ian McEwan, got a lot of attention at the 2008 Academy Awards ceremonies. Maybe the book is better. Brokeback Mountain (2005) This is the film that won or was nominated for more than 50 prestigious awards in 2005. It's billed as a "love story," but it makes uncomfortable viewing. Burn After Reading (2008) It features a stellar cast including Frances McDormand, George Clooney, J. K. Simmons, and Richard Jenkins, but this Coen film is a tremendous disappointment. Crash (2004) Criticized for its reliance on coincidence and its transparent lecture on racism and the essential goodness of Americans, Crash (2004) is a captivating movie that deserved its Academy Award. Crisp and Milk, Not a Snack Quentin Crisp, born 1908, lived 91 years. Harvey Milk died at 42 from an assassinīs bullet. Moral? Society doesnīt mind deviants as long as they donīt try to claim political rights. Go Ahead, Believe! Some fans of the TV series have panned the new X-Files film, but it deserves a fair viewing. The Scully/Mulder magic is still there. In Bruges (2008) In terms of the subject matter, foul language, and graphic violence, In Bruges is not a movie for the faint of heart. Nevertheless, it's an exceptionally good movie. Kung Fu Panda Not For Children The artwork is beautiful and the voices well done, but he violence is disturbing and the take away lesson is questionable. New Indy Film Mainly for Fans The new Indiana Jones movie, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls, is a treat for devoted Indy fans, but it doesn't measure up to the other action films in the theaters these days. Pretty Woman Not So Pretty Richard Gere and Julia Roberts are beautiful people and we all love a Cinderella story, but when you come down to it, prostitution is not a subject to be taken lightly. Schindler's List When all his other films are forgotten, Spielberg's Schindler's List will remain one of the greatest movies ever made. Shine (1996) The object of much bitter controversy and mean-spirited personal attacks on Helfgott and his wife, the movie Shine is a well-crafted and satisfying story about suffering and redemption. Six Movies About Joan of Arc Filmmakers have been drawn to Joan's story since the very beginnings of the movie industry. Here's an overview of six of the best known. Sling Blade (1996) Billy Bob Thornton of Hot Springs, Arkansas created an original with Sling Blade (1996). Twelve years after its release, this film remains a tour de force of acting, writing, and directing. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Slumdog Millionaire appeals to American audiences with its story of true love and rags to riches theme, but it also packs a critical punch when it comes to American cultural shortsightedness and the shallowness of celebrity. Slumdog Not the Only Great Indian Movie in 2008 Although released the same year as Slumdog Millionaire, Before the Rains, also set in India, got little media coverage and no respect from the critics. Thatīs a shame because this is a beautiful and timely movie on a par with Passage to India. Sophie's Choice Not My Choice Both Sophie's Choice and Schindler's List depict scenes of the Nazi Holocaust. Schindler's List, however, is a great film, while Sophie's Choice is an unpleasant experience, start to finish. The Best Years of Our Lives Still Timely It may be sixty years old, but The Best Years of Our Lives is a long way from being out-of-date. A must see for everyone, especially families of returning veterans. The Darjeeling Limited (2007) For a movie that lists three screenwriters, The Darjeeling Limited doesn't offer much of a story. The color-splashed glimpses of life in India provide what entertainment there is. The Departed (2006) Most reviews of The Departed describe it as "entertaining." It all depends upon whether one finds entertainment in sadistic behavior that goes unpunished. The Fisher King and Love The Fisher King (1991) defines love far better than Segal's sentimental Love Story. Love means saying you're sorry, asking forgiveness, and acknowledging the needs of others even when they don't make sense to us. The Sea Within (2004) Anyone who saw Javier Bardem as an implacable killer in No Country for Old Men will be blown away by his performance as a lovable, long-suffering quadriplegic in this Spanish film. There Will Be Blood (2007) This movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis received eleven Academy Award nominations, despite the fact that it's missing a coherent story and has no characters a viewer can identify with. What's A Cult Film? Few people agree on a definition of a "cult" film. The problem may be that such movies fall into several categories. Here's a description of the universal characteristics of a cult film and an attempt to categorize the different types. Why We Love A Christmas Story In December TV channels play it all day and some people watch every time. A Christmas Story has taken its place beside It's A Wonderful Life as America's favorite Christmas movie. Why do we love it as we do?
