Peace That Lasts
- the normal, nonwarring condition of a nation, group of nations, or the world
- to end hostilities and abstain from further fighting or antagonism
- a state of mutual harmony between people or groups, especially in personal relations
What does peace mean to you? If you?ve been around very long, you know the above definitions, when applied to our human state, are temporary at best. Peace between nations, groups, families, or acquaintances isn?t something we can trust. We wonder how long it will last. Something happens, sin shows up, and harmony is destroyed. The simple knowledge that worldly peace is transient, steals peace of mind.
Biblical peace comes from the Holy Spirit. Peace is the state achieved at our reconciliation with God. When our sin-putting us at odds with God- is covered by the Savior, we are at peace. This is the only peace that lasts and the only state worth desiring.
When Isaiah spoke of the coming of the Christ, the coming of Jesus, he called him the Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
When the angels announced the birth of Jesus. They told the shepherds that the baby in the manger would bring peace to those on whom his favor rests.( Luke 2:14)
The Bible says that the peace of God, reassures the heart, transcends understanding, and stands guard over our heart and mind. It is ours through Jesus Christ. (Philippians 4:7)
Paying too much attention to the ways of this world, focusing on circumstance, causes us to miss the blessing readily available through Jesus.
Jesus calmed a storm that threatened terrified apostles. By that time his followers had seen many miracles, but focusing on the wind, they failed to trust him. It seems that they didn?t understand they were always in his care. (Mark 4:35-40)
My definition of peace is knowing God and trusting him to provide in every circumstance. Because I know he is able to do far more than all I can ever ask or even imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)
This peace is not something that we can strive for, search for on our own, or expect the government to provide. The supernatural peace of God is found only in him.
So as Paul wrote to the Roman church, I wish this for you:
?May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.? Romans 15:13 ESV
