Elisheba Wife of Aaron
Elisheba, pronounced el-ee-sheh - bah, is a beautiful, feminine name found in the Old Testament of the bible. It may also be spelled Elisheva.
This woman of the bible lived in the approximate time period of 1500 B.C. - at the time Moses was about to lead the nation of Israel out of Egypt. She is mentioned in one verse of the bible - Exodus 6:23 - and, like many women of the bible, is known only by her family ties.
She was the daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon. Her brother, Nahshon, was the father of Salmon, an ancestor of Boaz and King David, which puts him in the genealogy of Christ.
Elisheba was the wife of the High Priest Aaron, who was the brother of Moses. You may remember that since Moses was a timid speaker, Aaron was selected to go with him to speak to Pharaoh, king of Egypt to tell him to let the Israelites go out of his country. Aaron was well loved by the Israelite community. When he died, the entire nation wept for thirty days.
Elisheba and Aaron had four sons - Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
Nadab and Abihu: Two of the sons were tragically lost when they attempted to make an offering to the Lord in an unauthorized manner. Apparently the instructions for the offering of incense were not properly followed. They may have attempted to incorporate a pagan ritual into their worship or they may have had a self-serving motive, such as promoting themselves over their father, the High Priest. Some commentators speculate that they may have been drunk. Whatever the reason, when they offered the unauthorized fire before the Lord, the fire flamed out and consumed them. (Leviticus 10:1-2)
Eleazar and Ithamar: The two remaining sons would have made their mother proud. They served as priests during their father's lifetime. When Aaron died, Elisheba's son Eleazar became High Priest in his place. (Numbers 20:28-29)
Her son, Ithamar was in charge of all the Levites. (Levites were descendants of Levi, in charge of the religious duties of Israel and the care of the tabernacle.)
Elisheba was one of the numerous women who honored their husbands, raised children, experienced triumph as well as unimaginable heartache; all while serving their God quietly in the pages of the bible.
