Fancy Nancy – Explorer Extraordinaire! by author and illustrator duo Jane O’Conner and Robin Preiss Glasser

Who is Fancy Nancy?

Nancy is a darling little girl who believes that more is always better with it comes to being fancy. She loves to be decked out in a fancy tiara and sparkly shoes and is always looking for the opportunity to teach her family more ways to be fancy. The most endearing characteristic of Fancy Nancy is all the big, fancy words she likes to use. She loves words such as “iridescent”, and “ecstatic” and “extraordinary” and loves French words – but she always explains what the words actually mean so without seeming like a lesson she share the opportunity to learn new and fancy vocabulary words.

Fancy Nancy and Bree are the founding members of their club. (That means they are the ones who started it) There are many important items that an Extraordinaire Explorer will need, such as: long sleeve shirt and pants, a notebook and pen, a baseball cap. Those are the essential items, the not essential items, but very good to have are: a camera, binoculars, lace gloves, magnifying glass, and glamour sunglasses. (after all, just because you are exploring doesn’t mean you can’t be fancy!)

It is imperative for explorers to have a club house. Their club house is in Fancy Nancy’s back yard, and Nancy’s house is between Bree’s house and Mrs. DeVine’s house. They map out their territory and so they plan to explore in their yards and Mrs. DeVine’s yard.

First order of business is to sprinkle some sugar on an anthill to watch the ants. Then they watch fly’s but they are too fast to really see, and then some lady bugs. They look at butterflies but don’t touch them because they are too fragile (that’s a fancy way of saying they get hurt easily).

Enjoy time with Fancy Nancy in this book as she sees bugs, butterflies and bees, and saves a baby bird by returning it to the nest.
