Dear readers,

After the Copper Basin 300 finished up, temperatures around the state skyrocketed. The following weekend, the Kuskokwim 300, out of Bethel, was delayed several days due to weather – warm weather. In Chistochina we had nearly a week of temperatures in the mid to upper 40s; it even rained a couple of times, turning our nice dry snow into an icy mess. If it weren’t for the January darkness, it would have felt like April. One week I wasn’t running the dogs because it was too cold, and the next week I wasn’t running them because it was too warm!

Fortunately, temperatures returned to the more normal – and more comfortable – range of just around zero. As February approaches, daylight increases. Spring is just around the corner! (Of course, spring in Alaska means lots of snow on the ground, lots of daylight, and mild temperatures – perfect conditions for “winter” sports like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.) Believe it or not, I will be starting sweet pea seeds this week; it won’t be long before its time to get the veggies started as well.
