Alaska

November 18 2008 Alaska Newsletter

Dear Readers,

When I lived in the northwestern portion of the state, I had the privilege of meeting quite a few interesting individuals. Bob Uhl was one of these individuals – he came to Alaska from California decades ago, married a local Native, and never went back. In fact, he is quite well known in the region for his breadth and depth of knowledge about local flora and fauna and the ways they are used by residents. Until recently, he and his wife Carrie lived out on the land, alternating between winters in a one room log cabin in an inland spruce patch and summers in the wall tent out on the beach.

Seth Kantner writes about Bob and Carrie in his book “Shopping for Porcupine.” Seth is another individual I met while in the northwest region. Presuming on our acquaintance, I asked him to answer a few questions about his latest book. I hope you enjoy the “conversation.”

Have a great week,
Kimi
