Dear Readers -
I received an email this week from a friend in Kobuk, where I taught for three years, letting me know it was 52 below zero. At those temperatures, people pretty much stay inside, venturing out only to feed dogs or get wood for the stove. Planes don't fly, snow machines don't run, and one worries about the village generator shutting down. Thankfully, we haven't had any cold spells like that here in Chistochina this winter, although it's always a possibility.
