Dear readers,

February is going by quickly. We’ve had a lot of temperature fluctuations this year, which has wreaked havoc on our creek. Temperature changes cause changes in the ice (cracking, shifting) and consequently water seeps out and overflows. Thus the name “overflow.” This is a constant of winter in Alaska and can often cause hazardous travel. One might be traveling along on a blanket of white, and suddenly sink into a puddle of slush – overflow is often hidden beneath fresh snow.

This year it is particular bad here at home. The overflow has crept into the greenhouses and into the dog lot and is even starting to penetrate the driveway. The overflow is often soft and slushy for a few days, and then freezes into a slick of ice, which is hazardous for snow machines and dog sleds alike. It’s been a bit of a challenge getting out with the dogs this year as the creek is alternately wet and sloppy or dry and slick.

Regardless, the days are getting longer. Nights are still cold but daytime is mild and warm in the sun. This is my favorite time of winter.
