February 7 2009 Alaska Newsletter

Dear readers,

February is here and it the days are getting noticeably longer – finally! We are gaining daylight at the rate of six minutes per day, a rate that increases as we get closer to March 21, the spring equinox. This is my favorite time of winter, when the temperatures are cold but the days are full of bright sunshine. We’ve had plenty of snow this year, too, so I am looking forward to some nice long spring runs with the dogs, as well as some overnight camping trips.

The Iron Dog race begins tomorrow. This is the snow machine race that our governor’s husband, Todd Palin, has won four times. The Yukon Quest starts next weekend (Whitehorse to Fairbanks this year), and the Iditarod starts in less than a month. It’s a busy time around the state, as Alaskan’s enjoy the best part of winter – playing in the snow!

Have a great week,
Kimi
