Beer Fox Tip of the Week:
If you are a Homebrewer who takes pride in your craft, consider growing your own hops. They grow well between the 40th and 50th parallel, and require sunshine, loamy, well-drained soil that stays moist during the growing season, and a trellis or some other such device to climb. Fertilize soil with potash, phosphates and nitrogen. Manure compost or a commercial fertilizer should work well.
You will want to obtain root cuttings, or rhizomes, that are 8 to 12 inches long, from the female type (male types do not produce hop cones used in brewing.) March is the perfect time of year to obtain your cuttings, with harvest in August or September.
Hop rhizomes are available through your local homebrew supply, from seed or nursery catalogs, or online athttp://www.keystonehomebrew.com
Keystone Homebrew Supply has 17 different hop rhizomes available, from Cascade, Chinook and Centenniel to Hallertau, Northern Brewer, Saaz and Willamette.
Happy growing!
Beer Fox Laugh of the Week:
Two small boys, not yet old enough to be in school, were overheard talking at the zoo one day. "My name is Billy. What's yours?" asked the first boy. "Tommy," replied the second. "My Daddy's an accountant. What does your Daddy do for a living?" asked Billy. Tommy replied, "My Daddy's a lawyer."
"Honest?" asked Billy. "No, just the regular kind", replied Tommy.

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them.
His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says "I'm sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'"
"But why?" asks the man. "I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replies.
Beer News:
Foster's Crown Lager came on the scene in Australia in 1953, as a commemorative beer to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Crown Lager is the market leader in Australia, particularly among sports fans and bar hoppers.
Foster's has been watching the positive impact of aluminum bottles in the US marketing arena, and is now offering Crown Lager in this same distinctive packaging. They believe the unique shape, benefits of keeping beer colder longer, light protective element, upscale look and distinct style could only enhance the image of their already premium brew.
Craft Brew of the Week Award:
Aviator Red - Flying Bison Brewery, Buffalo, New York, USA
Style: American Amber/Red Ale
Pours a deep ruby-copper with sticky, compact tan head that grabs the side of the glass in spotty flecks. Your nose fills with a bready, caramel aroma, decorated with chocolate-nut toffee, juicy hops and earth. Flavors of crisp, roasted caramel wash across the tongue with gentle carbonation, while wood and earth arise in keen bitterness.
Great session beer, good with food, easy to enjoy!
Cheers!
