Beer Fox Tip of the Week

George Hummel of Home Sweet Homebrew in Philadelphia has just launched his new book, "The Complete Homebrew Beer Book: 200 Easy Recipes, from Ales and Lagers to Extreme Beers and International Favorites", published by Robert Rose, copyright 2011.

Hummel is winner of the Pennsylvania Governor's Inspiration Award, with his wife Nancy Rigberg, and recipe designer of George's Fault, 2005 Gold Medalist and 2009 Silver Medalist in the Specialty Honey Lager or Ale category at the Great American Beer Festival, brewed by Gordon Grubb at Nodding Head Brewpub.

These are all allegedly from genuine claim forms when people have had an accident and are trying to get their insurance companies to pay out:

"I started to slow down but the traffic was more stationary than I thought."

"I pulled into the shoulder of the road with smoke coming from under the hood. I realized the car was on fire so took my dog and smothered it with a blanket."

Q: Could either driver have done anything to avoid the accident?
A: Traveled by bus?

The claimant had collided with a cow. The questions and answers on the claim form were -

A: Horn.
Q: What warning was given by the other party?
A: Moo.

"On approach to the traffic lights the car in front suddenly broke."

"I had been shopping for plants all day and was on my way home. As I reached an intersection a hedge sprang up obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car."

"I thought my window was down, but I found it was up when I put my head through it."

"I had been learning to drive with power steering. I turned the wheel to what I thought was enough and found myself in a different direction going the opposite way."

On Tuesday, March 29, 2011, head brewer Chris LaPierre of Iron Hill Brewery, Maple Shade, New Jersey, and Suzanne Woods, his girlfriend, Beer Lass, and President of the Women's In Pursuit of Ale (IPA) Club of Philadelphia, an all-women beer appreciation group, collaborated at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant (124 East Kings Highway) to create a special pepper-infused saison they are calling "Saizanne."

Woods, a renowned local beer expert,has been featured in a number of beer publications. "We’ve talked for a long time about brewing a beer together," she said, "but we wanted to make something really special and not just a gimmick." The release party will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Maple Shade, NJ brewpub.

When plans for the 16th Annual Kona Brewers Festival came together, there was no inkling that Mother Nature would be flexing her muscle in the Hawaiian Islands. The 9 point earthquake that caused such devastation in Japan was followed by an equally devastating tsunami that struck Japan's coast with a vengeance.

Those staying at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel, also the site of the Kona Brewers Festival, were stunned to learn that they, too, were being evacuated due to an impending tsunami backlash in the Islands.

The wave struck at 3:27 am the day before the fest was to begin, washing out the planned site. The event was moved to the Kona Brewery Parking Lot and opened as planned on Saturday with raucous crowds and the usual Trash Fashion Show - better than ever, thanks to the fresh supply left by the ocean's untamed hand.
