Dear Readers,

I’m writing from northern Virginia this week, where I’m visiting family. The contrast between here and my home is astounding. When I left the ground and trees were yet bare and brown and the creek was a stream of chocolate. I had just seen my first robin, and noticed several juncos and sparrows flitting in and out from under the porch – perhaps looking for a place to nest. But here everything is green, the spring flowering bulbs have mostly faded, and there is a nest of newborn robins under the eaves of my parents’ deck. Spring is moving into summer here – and reminding me of what I have to look forward to when I arrive back home.

May is a big month for birders in Alaska as hundreds of thousands of migrants return to various portions of the state for summer breeding. A favorite observation spot for many is Creamer’s Field in Fairbanks. Read more about it in my latest article here:
