Dear Readers,

August ushers in fall in Alaska, and with it, those outdoor activities associated with it. Berry picking is a big activity for many Alaskans in August; another large percentage of the state heads out hunting. It’s a busy time of year for those who fill their freezers with the bounty of the warmer months to sustain them through the winter.

I’ve been out picking berries. We have yet to find a good blueberry patch since we’ve moved to Chistochina, but both high bush and low bush cranberries are abundant in the area around our house. Though they are not the best berries for fresh eating, they make tasty jelly and are good in muffins and bread.

With all the wet weather we’ve had, mushrooms are abundant this year. I’m not an expert on identification, but they do make good photo subjects. Here’s a couple of links to some recent finds.
