Alaska

August 29 2008 Alaska Newsletter

Dear Readers,

I was surprised to read in the newspaper this morning that our governor, Sarah Palin, is McCain’s pick for a running mate. Of course, I wasn’t the only one who was surprised. I’m not sure what I think, at this point. Lack of experience, true, but she does have integrity and a stubborn streak, both of which would be welcome traits in Washington politics. On the other hand, when her name was tossed around months ago as a VP possibility, she said she wasn’t interested. What has changed?

In any event, there will be a lot of search for information on Palin in the next few weeks. As far as I know, there is only one book available at the present time, which I’ve reviewed in this week’s article. It’s not the greatest writing, but it does provide the facts in a straightforward manner. If you want an easy-to-read overview of Palin’s brief political career, it’s a good place to start.

Meanwhile, fall is definitely here. The cottonwood and birch are turning yellow as fireweed and high-bush cranberry leaves take on a reddish hue. We haven’t had the first frost yet, but I’m sure it’s not too far away.

Have a great week.

Kimi
