September 14 2008 Alaska Newsletter

Dear Readers,

It’s mid-September and surprisingly, we haven’t had a hard frost yet. It has been rainy and cool, and the garden is still hanging on. . . I may get some good tomatoes out of the greenhouse yet. Meanwhile, in Fairbanks, gardeners have been lamenting their large crop of green tomatoes and discussing ways to avoid letting the entire summer’s crop go to waste.

Leaves litter the ground with a blanket of yellow-gold now, though the trees are not yet bare. I expect we’ll see our first snow fall within a month, though it’s not likely to accumulate until November. As our daylight steadily decreases we frantically try to finish up all the projects that need doing before freeze-up. Winter is fast approaching.

Have a great week.

Kimi
