African countries have gone through many changes in recent history. This includes their flags. The current flags have elements that represent concepts and ideas important to that country. Although Saint Helena is an overseas territory of Britain, they do have their own flag. The Flag of Saint Helena was adopted on October 4, 1984. Saint Helena's flag is blue with the flag of the UK in the upper corner and Saint Helena's shield centered on the outer half of the flag. The upper third of the shield has a white plover on a yellow background. The rest of the shield has a rocky coastline on the left while offshore there is a three-masted sailing ship with sails furled flying an English flag.
São Tomé and Príncipe
The current flag of São Tomé and Príncipe was adopted on November 5, 1975. The flag has three horizontal bands of green (on the top), yellow (of double width), and green. There are two black five-pointed stars placed side by side in the center of the yellow band. A red isosceles triangle is based on the hoist side. The color red represents the struggle for independence. The two stars represent the two main islands of São Tomé and Príncipe.
The current flag of Senegal was adopted on August 20, 1960. The flag has three equal vertical bands of green (hoist side), yellow, and red. There is a small green five-pointed star centered in the yellow band. The color green represents Islam, progress, and hope. The color yellow represents natural wealth and progress. The color red represents sacrifice and determination. The green star denotes unity and hope.

The current flag of the Seychelles was adopted on June 18, 1996. There are five oblique bands of blue, yellow, red, white, and green radiating from the bottom of the hoist side. The slanting bands represent a dynamic new country moving into the future. The color blue represents the sky and the sea that surrounds the Seychelles. The color yellow represents the sun which gives light and life. The color red represents the people and their determination to work for the future in unity and love. The color white represents social justice and harmony. The color green represents the land and natural environment.
The current flag of Sierra Leone was adopted on April 27, 1961. The flag has three equal horizontal bands of green, white, and blue. The color green represents agriculture, mountains, and natural resources. The color white represents unity and justice. The color blue represents the sea and the natural harbor in Freetown.
