I've read a bunch of articles about how a typical day of an entrepreneur goes. And I thought about writing my own "Day in the life" article. There's a problem though.
No two days are exactly alike.
So, to me, giving you my schedule of a particular day wouldn't be painting enough of the picture.
You see, one of the things that sticks out about my businesses is that the collection of work that I do is quite varied and more eclectic than many folks would want to get. That's not an apology. It definitely works for me.
A better idea, in shedding some light on the subject of being my own boss, is to give you a bigger slice. Let's try a week. Keep in mind that there are many variables in my month, so no matter how close I'll get to giving you a window into the world of working from home, it's still a few brush strokes shy of a masterpiece.
Monday
Wake up around 9 a.m. - often on the couch, where I fell asleep trying to watch a movie the night before. Get caffeinated beverage. Start the computer. Think about what I want to accomplish today. Have more than I can sanely do in a day. Prioritize. Stream Radio Paradise through my computer speakers. Check email from my various businesses. Reply to anything urgent. File the rest for later. Eat a light breakfast, drink water.
Complete the most important tasks (or whatever causes the most anxiety) before lunch. Do lunch, take a walk with two water bottles - they double as hydration and freeweights!
Check BellaOnline Forum, make sure new Article looks good, send Newsletter, think about the articles I want to write this week. Check the other sites I write for, for assignments & offers. Make time to get away from the computer for a while. Have writing ideas on my mind... inevitably return to my computer and write.
I often work late into the night on Monday & Tuesday, so I can coast for the rest of the week.
Tuesday
Wake up around 10 a.m. - I likely stayed up writing until 2 a.m.. Get water. Take vitamins. Start computer. Think about what I want to accomplish today. Yadda, yadda. Congratulate friends & clients on their accomplishments. Entertain the new business ideas that have been bombarding my brain. Research feasibility & desirability. Get excited. Forget to eat lunch. Finally scarf down some homemade nachos at 3 p.m.. Think about doing my nails - but don't actually do it. Client stuff. Database Management. Search Engine Optimization. Marketing. Read book for review. Jot down writing ideas until it's time to go out. Tuesday night: either swing dancing or karaoke.
Wednesday
Awake at 9. Crave sushi. Eat nachos. Check in on BellaOnline Forum. Start writing next week's article. Blog maintenance. Drink Emergen-C or VitaminWater. Think about the friends I haven't seen or talked to in a while. Go back to work. Check Email. Client stuff*. Do some self-care or house-care. Take time for friend time or date time in the evening. Read book for review.
Thursday
Awake at 9. Computer. Laundry. Email & Blog. Lunch & TV. Switch Laundry. Go for a walk along the lake. Write articles in my head. Come home & write them on the computer. Client stuff. Read book for review. I should start writing the review & sending out query letters, but if the book is good, I tend to read the whole book first. Write a few sponsored posts & paid writing pieces. Go out & do something fun in the evening.
Friday
Awake whenever my eyes open. Road trip or errand running day. If I need to travel for a project, I tend to drive. I like being on the road with myself & my radio. I stop to hike or photograph interesting scenes along the way. Or, I run the out-of-the-house errands, for any weekend projects. Groceries, etc. Get in some marketing, writing, blogging, or other work-related tasks before I go out for the evening. If I go to parties, bring juggling toys.
Saturday
Awake at 8:30. Visit Gramps 9-10 a.m.. Mow Lawn. Visit friends. Read. Date time! If I'm lucky, there's sushi or grilled steak involved! Or, if there's a dance, I'll go swing dancing for the evening.
Sunday
Wake up with grand intentions of getting stuff done. End up just thinking about what I'm grateful for, listening to NPR & puttering about until lunch with my family. Run any errands for the week. Submit articles. Go dancing or to karaoke. Start my SEO software. Analyze keywords, traffic, search engine response. Submit new items to select search engines. Check AdSense. Try to watch a movie before bed. Fall asleep on the couch.
