Lincoln Inc - A Book Review

How many books or documentaries are there on Abraham Lincoln? Far into the hundreds of thousands and growing each year. What is it about this man that has him the subject of so many nonfiction, fiction, and poetic pieces? What is it about this man that he can be found in every corner of the commercial world? Lincoln, Inc.: Selling the Sixteenth President in Contemporary America by Jackie Hogan dives deep into an aspect of Lincoln that we are submerged in yet have never noticed how far deep we are.

It can generally be agreed upon that Abraham Lincoln is an iconic figure in American history and is used to represent honesty, integrity, and many other characteristics that everyone is encouraged to follow. But have we found the real Abraham Lincoln or have we created a Lincoln to fit us and the society around us?

Hogan takes the reader into how Americans have viewed and used the Lincoln image from the time of his first appearance in the public eye until today. The book shows how as society changes, so does the approach we have to Lincoln. The reader finds statistics of which quotes or attributes are most used of Lincoln and why. So many quotes are ignored because they do not fit in with how society views him. Myths rise up to push him to a higher pillar and have become facts that are even taught in school.

Why is there such a fascination? The author points out that it could be because Lincoln never wrote a memoir or anything similar before his untimely death. Who was the real Lincoln? Will we ever know? It doesn’t matter to most of America who use his name to help promote commercial products and use his image in movies and books. He appears in science fiction, romances, and mysteries. Each representation is unique and tries to mold him into what we want.

This is a very interesting book that approaches a subject that has never really been taken by the horns and wrestled with. Americans take Lincoln’s image and name for granted and don’t question why it is being used and how. Yet, Abraham Lincoln is a big part of our lives that is still an enigma to most.

A great book to give you a different perspective on Abraham Lincoln and how we view him and use him. I had never thought of how much we actually use him to make money or to get something we desire. This book is worth your time reading and could be a great discussion starter with others.
