Surviving the Angel of Death - A Book Review

There are many stories from the Holocaust. Each of them pulls at your heart as you hear the firsthand accounts of the horror within the concentration camps. Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz by Eva Kor and Lisa Rojany Buccieri is the account of a young childís survival under the experimentation of Dr. Mengele. Itís a story that will have you holding your child close to you.

Dr. Mengele was notorious for experimenting on the prisoners of Auschwitz. Twins were his main focus though he was not averse to using pregnant women and those that had deformities or unusual physical features. Cutting open those that were still alive, infecting subjects with various diseases and experimenting with drugs was common procedure under Dr. Mengele who became known as the Angel of Death. He wanted to multiple the Aryan race quickly. Twins could be the way to achieve that goal. How were twins created? What made them so unique? How could he manipulate them to create the perfect Aryan? He would do anything including killing twins with various diseases so that he could autopsy them immediately and compare their organs.

This book is a story of Eva and her sister, Miriam. At the age of 10, these young girls were torn from their parents and older sisters that they never saw again. Eva relates how they struggled to survive against diseases, unsanitary conditions, and starvation and managed to find freedom through the Soviet soldiers. But her story goes further than that into her teenage years and as a young wife and mother in America. She dives into the subject of forgiveness of the doctors that experimented on her, including Dr. Mengele, forgiving her parents for not protecting them, and forgiving herself for harboring resentment.

This was a quick read and is designed for children ages 12 and up. I found myself in tears reading certain passages and thought of how horrible it would be if I had lost my children and had them under the hand of a monster who experimented on their bodies. This is a book that you need to read if you have any interest in the Holocaust. It would be a great resource for anyone in middle school and high school to get a firsthand account of what it was like to live in a Nazi concentration camp.

Note: This book was supplied to me by the publisher upon my request.
