Tell me why men are still out earning women who are doing the same job? Are men smarter? Do men work harder at their jobs? Are men more ambitious?
Here is an example of what I mean: I read this on Forbes.com and all I could do is shake my head – what do you think?
On U. S. television, “When it comes to making money, it still pays to be a man. Prime-time’s 10 top-earning men collectively raked in $308 million between June 1, 2009 and June 1, 2010, by our estimates, nearly double the $162 million their female counterparts pulled down during the same period.”
Did I miss something here? Isn’t this 2012 and haven’t women been working toward, and even fighting for, equal pay?
I guess there is a glimmer of hope if you take to heart the numbers from these statistics:
According to the June 2010 U.S. Department of Labor report on earnings -
- Women aged 35 and older earned roughly 75% of what male counterparts earned.
- Women aged 25-34 earned 89% of what male counterparts earned.
- Women aged 16-24 earned 93% of what male counterparts earned.
- Women now earn almost 60% of all Bachelors and Masters degrees.
I’m generally not a negative person but shouldn’t the earnings report show less of a wage gap for all women in the workforce?
Is it any wonder that women are starting their own businesses at twice the rate of men? But that too can pose some challenges – are women prepared emotionally and financially to become entrepreneurs?
I recently began to research materials available for budding women entrepreneurs and I found very little well-written books and courses. I know they are out there but I was surprised at how deep within the Internet I had to dig.
What upset me most is that several of the best selling books and the highest Google ranked articles were written by men aimed at women in business. There was even a woman’s CEO club owned and run by a man. I have nothing against men and I appreciate their expertise. What concerns me is that I’m not seeing more women writing, mentoring and leading women 35 and older to greater professional success.
We, as women, cannot give up before payday. We cannot give up before we have succeeded to our full potential personally, professionally and financially. We cannot give up on our dreams to have more, be more and do more. We cannot give up before we’ve shared our wisdom with other women.
