Migraines fall into two main types - the classic kind with an aura and the common migraine without an aura (these are usually much less painful than the classic variety.) An ocular migraine is related and often confused with the classic migraine because it's accompanied by an aura.
An aura is a visual disturbance that occurs shortly before the onset of a migraine headache and may include flashing lights, complex patterns or seeing spots. Auras are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. They're not only painful but quite psychologically disturbing for people who experience the symptoms of classic migraines.
