Your Business Needs a Mission Statement


If you take owning a business seriously, then your business needs a mission statement. A mission statement is a succinct statement telling your employees and customers the what, why and how of your business. Without a well-written mission statement, a business often lacks focus.

Dictionary.com defines a mission statement as: An official statement of the aims and objectives of a business or other organization.

Every time your company creates a website or blog, introduces a new product or, corresponds with a current customer or potential customer, you should be projecting your company’s mission statement.

A business is never too small to write a mission statement. Yes, even a home-based business housed on the corner of a kitchen table needs a mission statement. A mission statement is usually 3-5 sentences, but conveys a strong message. Think of a mission statement this way: If you were standing in front of a group of potential customers or investors and had 30 seconds to tell them about your company, what would you say?

Here are three essential elements of a mission statement:
1. What your company does – the purpose
2. How your company serves – the benefit
3. What your company stands for – the value

Here is an excellent example:
You’ll find this mission statement on the website of the Coca-Cola Company:

“Our Roadmap starts with our mission, which is enduring. It declares our purpose as a company and serves as the standard against which we weigh our actions and decisions.
  • To refresh the world...
  • To inspire moments of optimism and happiness...
  • To create value and make a difference.”
When you look at the Coca-Cola mission statement, it covers all three essential elements carefully and succinctly.

Here’s where to start:
1. Define what your business does and how it does it.
2. Define your target market and how they benefit from what you are offering.
3. Define what you believe is the value your company adds to the lives of your target market.
4. Define why you are the best company within your industry to serve your target market.
5. Take complete ownership of your mission statement – believe it and live it every waking business hour.

Your mission statement is reflected in the look of your website, in your products and in the customer service you deliver day-to-day. Your business will have greater focus when you, and your employees and customers, truly understand who you are, what you do and what your company believes in. It is well worth the time, energy and effort to write a mission statement for your business.
