To Sell Is Human - Daniel Pink - A Review
Here’s a fact that is hard to ignore: 1 out of 9 American workers works in sales. To many of us “sales” is a dirty word. Daniel Pink, in his latest book To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, believes that no matter our profession, each of us is selling something to someone.
As a business coach I work with women in network marketing, women who own storefront businesses and women who have home-based Internet Marketing businesses and yet, almost every one of them will tell me that they don’t sell – they are not salespeople. If you feel and think the same way, that you are not in sales, then it is time to read Daniel Pink’s latest book To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others.
The author believes it is not necessarily as much about “selling” as it is about persuading and influencing. He states: “I discovered that I spend a sizable portion of my day selling in a broader sense— persuading, influencing, and convincing others. And I’m not special. Physicians sell patients on a remedy. Lawyers sell juries on a verdict. Teachers sell students on the value of paying attention in class.”
Here is an interesting fact from the book: A survey conducted with the research firm Qualtrics found that “Across a range of professions, we are devoting roughly twenty-four minutes of every hour to moving others.”
From a strictly professional aspect, here is what I believe: As a businessperson, if you are not selling, persuading or influencing others to buy or use your product or service, you are not going to remain in business. The well-researched and documented material is this book reinforces my belief.
Daniel Pink writes to inform – he is thorough in his research and knows how to take that research and apply it to everyday life. To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others not only informs us about why selling is important but, he spends time showing us how to sell to today’s savvy customers. The author has found a good blend between a “scientific” approach to selling and real-world techniques for selling to our target markets.
You don’t have to be a professional salesperson to read this book. If you’re marketing your business, representing a product or persuading others to see you point of view, you should read this book. It’s not a book you can read quickly, it takes time to digest. I read it carefully and found myself taking pages of notes. If you’re serious about learning how to move others to take action, I highly recommend To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others. This is a well written and well researched business book.
