Whitman's Sampler Net Carb

If you're looking for a box of chocolates, avoid the sugar! Whitman's Sampler now has a net carb version which is MUCH lower in sugar than regular chocolates.

In the world of boxed chocolates, a sampler is a box that has a few of many different kinds of chocolate, so that you can sample all the different varieties. With the Whitman's Net Carb sampler, you get:

2 toffee sticks
2 caramels
2 lemon creams
2 fruit and nut caramels
2 almond miniatures
2 truffles
2 chocolate butter creams
1 messenger boy (solid chocolate rectangle)

Each chocolate here is only 0.3 net grams of carbs each! That's not even THREE net grams ... it is ZERO POINT THREE as in less than 1g. If you ate 3 pieces of chocolate, it rounds out to 0.8g of total net carbs! Compare that with just about any other chocolate on the market. This is pretty amazing.

Now, of course, there has to be a way that they added in sweetness. They do have Splenda in here, but for baked goods often Splenda isn't enough to give the proper texture and sweetness. So they added in sugar alcohols as well. There is a hefty 20.2g of sugar alcohols for every 3 pieces. That is coming as Maltitol. While most eaters have no issues at all with maltitol, some do. If you are sensitive at all to sugar alcohols, eat these sparingly as a special treat. If you've never had sugar alcohols before, try just one to see how your body reacts. People often react strongly to the first sugar alcohols they try, and then have less and less of a reaction as they have more of them.

So, hwo do they taset? Most of the chocolates involve a hard outer chocolate shell with a soft, creamy inner filling. The chocolate is creamy and smooth, and tastes perfect. I think by this point that all bakers have figured out how to make a sugar-free chocolate without any problem. They all taste perfect. The creamy insides are also quite nice. The lemon tastes lemony, the chocolate butter is smooth and buttery, in general everything is quite tasty.

Remember, it's never healthy to sit there and eat an entire box of chocolates down, no matter what their sugar count! You're supposed to be eating healthy food with nutrients in it :) However, if you're looking for 2 or 3 chocolates as a treat while you sip your port wine on the back porch with a friend, then this is definitely the ticket. It is far, far better than standard chocolates and gives the same yummy flavor.
