Provident Living: The Newest LDS Website

Provident Living: The Newest LDS Website
By guest author, P.D. Wiles.

Many of us long-time LDS members remember the Preparedness Wheel, which showed up in everything from Relief Society Homemaking Lessons to Sunday Priesthood quorum meetings. It was a staple at stake leadership meetings, and useful in teaching new members the basic principles LDS members follow in adopting self-reliant practices.

Recently, the church launched providentliving.org, its latest official website, dedicated to providing quick access to church resources that teach principles of spiritual and temporal welfare. Today the wheel has a new look for the new millennium, thanks to the wonders of the internet and computer graphics. But the basic information the wheel represents has not changed. Today, more than ever, church leaders have counseled us to avoid excessive consumer debt, to acquire as much education as possible, and to be less wasteful in our habits.

On providentliving.org’s homepage, you can highlight each section of the wheel, and a brief definition of each welfare area is displayed. There is also a section dedicated to employment information that includes a tutorial to help you set goals and choose a career path based on your skills, talents, and resources. If you are an employer wishing to post job openings, there is a link to which you can submit information. And at the top of the wheel is a link specifically for church leaders who deal with welfare issues. Here leaders can find answers to the most commonly asked questions about administering church welfare, links to external resources such as materials or welfare specialists, and an overview of the church welfare system.

Links on the newly modified wheel—caring for others, physical health, food storage and emergency preparedness, social and emotional strength, resource management, and education and literacy—lead you to selected articles from church magazines, instructional materials, and featured multimedia that illustrate particular topics.

There is much to explore on providentliving.org. Whether you are preparing a lesson, looking for accurate information, or wish to help a nonmember friend learn more about the church’s teachings on spiritual and temporal welfare, this new website is the place to visit.
