World Centers--Our Cabana The third World Center to open its doors was Our Cabaña in 1957. Our Cabaña is located in the suburbs of Cuernavaca, Mexico. With housing for 90, it is the largest of the four world centers and is located about an hour south of Mexico City. Facilities at Our Cabaña include a series of buildings for programs and accommodations plus five acres of gardens, a pool, a fire circle, a volleyball court, and tennis courts. Our Cabaña operates on a program schedule with themes including Mexican heritage, Mexican festivals, and cooking. Programs for girls center mainly on the mission of Our Cabaña, which is to "challenge young women to live and value international friendship and understanding." To meet that goal, Our Cabaña hosts friendship events for 13- to 18-year-old Girl Guides and Girl Scouts during the summer. In addition, there are also an opportunities to learn to speak Spanish and to participate in local community service projects. Service projects could include working with Habitat for Humanity or other projects that help local families and children. Some sessions are centered on activities and workshops to develop leadership, teamwork, and advocacy skills. Traveling away from Our Cabaña, visitors can shop for silver and crafts in in Cuernavaca, Taxco, and Tepoztlan. A visit to the archeological site at Xochicalco allows girls to learn more about the Aztecs and Mayans. Acapulco hosts aquatic activities for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, including scuba diving, kayaking, and snorkeling. Other activities in Acapulco include swimming with dolphins and watching the world-famous cliff divers. Guests at Our Cabaña also may visit the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in the state of Michoacan. The butterfly season starts in December and ends in April but the best time for a visit is in March, as the new butterflies prepare to migrate north. If joining a scheduled event does not interest you, a day visit, a visit with your troop, or a stay with your family is all possible, space permitting.
