From Procrastination to Productivity

Maybe you're lucky enough to have an intern or a secretary, someone who you can delegate the office spring cleaning and organizing to. If so - good for you - point them to this article, after the article about Office Spring Cleaning.

If you will be doing the brunt of the work yourself - read on! We're about to get down & dirty about cleaning and organizing your office.

Step 1 - Mental preparation. You have to get your mind ready to tackle many of these tasks - otherwise procrastination and deflection may take over. Make sure you've fed & watered yourself, have on comfortable clothes and shoes that protect your feet. Think about the list of little things that need to get done around your office. Things you may have been putting off, like tackling a mountain of filing and paper work, decluttering your desk, or making repairs. If you haven't done so, do the basic cleaning and decluttering outlined for you in my article about Office Spring Cleaning.

Step 2 - Pick four tasks that will be most influential on your success and productivity.

Step 3 - Pump some of your favorite, upbeat music to keep you moving. People tend to move at the rhythm of the music that they play - so slow instrumentals probably are not your best choice for right now. Funk, blues, disco, pop - whatever you like that has a good beat.

Step 4 - Focus on just one of your four tasks. Getting one influential thing done will give you a feeling of accomplishment and feel-good motivation to keep going. Set a timer for about an hour. We'll try to get this done in under an hour. When an hour has passed, take a break for water, and a piece of fruit. Then you'll be ready to tackle the next task or the rest of this one.

Step 5 - Repeat Step 4. Really focus on each of your four tasks - and set your goal to get them done in one hour. This way you don't try to tackle everything at once and get overwhelmed. You stay motivated, and accomplished - using your drive and productivity to set yourself up for success!

Step 6 - When you're done with all of your four tasks - reward yourself with a bit of play. Dance, take a walk, get a pedicure - whatever makes you feel happy and rewarded! You've earned it!
