Depression and Bi-Polar Natural Solutions

We’ve all felt depressed, at one time or another, when under emotional or physical stress. That’s normal. But “Depression,” characterized by long-term sadness or despair, is diagnosed when the condition becomes more severe and interferes with the ability to cope with the pressures of everyday life. Bipolar or "manic-depression" is the extreme back-and-forth swings from euphoric highs to unbearable lows.

Depression can become very serious if left unnoticed and untreated. In the early stages, however, proper nutrition, supplementation, exercise and various forms of psychotherapy should probably be explored before trying mood altering drugs, which all have severe side effects.

Here's what you can do to help prevent depression:

Clean up your lifestyle. Stop smoking, decrease stress, exercise regularly, follow your bliss, pet your cat and drink plenty of clean water. Surround yourself with supportive, fun and happy friends. Avoid things that knowingly upset you. Turn off your TV. Cancel your newspaper. Read things that make you feel good. Create interesting projects that keep you focused and involved.

Avoid processed foods, sugars, alcohol, caffeine products, etc. Change your diet to a whole food program. Eat organic whole grains, free-ranging meats, plenty of fresh fish and lots of colorful fruits and vegetables. Keep your fat consumption below 30% of your diet. For more information see A Chat About Fat.

Even when you do the best you can, you can’t always get everything you need from the foods you eat. See Fact or Fiction: You can get everything you need from the food you eat.

Get yourself on a good whole food, natural multi-vitamin complex. Increase your intake of quality Omega-6 oils and especially Omega-3 oils. Vitamin B complex helps your body handle the stress of daily life. And vitamins A, C & E, selenium and phytonutrients are great antioxidants.
