Books to Start the School Year

At the end of summer, millions of children get the jitters. School starts in a few weeks. All kinds of fears, dormant during the summer, arise at this time. Will my new teacher be mean? Will I have friends? For the preschool and kindergarten children attending school for the first time, what exactly happens in the big, spooky building?

Here is a short list of first day of school books. Choose one or two that is appropriate for the age level and interests.

Off to School, Baby Duck! This picture book is for the child starting preschool or kindergarten. Baby Duck fears the first day of school. Grandpa Duck encourages her to attend school. A good book for grandparents raising grandchildren. The parents appear preoccupied with their daily schedule to notice Baby Duck.

Silly School This hardback picture book is for the child going to school for the first time, too. Little Beth wants nothing to do with Silly School. The book explains to children what happens in the mysterious school. Also, they discover who is there. Little Beth’s entire family encourages her.

Marvin Monster’s Teacher Jitters The early reader chapter book is about a second grader. He has a new teacher. What is she like? Does she really turn monsters into humans? Oh my!

Mostly Monty Young Monty is entering the first grade. This is the first time he will attend school all day. Monty has no siblings or pets. The first grader does have asthma. Will he fit in and have friends?

Maisy Goes to School Lucy Cousins Maisy Mouse goes to school for the first time. She and the reader learn about the different fun activities in school. A prepare children for school book.

Spot Goes to School, Spot Loves School Spot goes to school for the first time, too. He learns he will see his friends and do fun classroom activities. Children love to read Spot's new school experiences.

Owen Owen will start kindergarten in a few weeks, however he wants to take his blankie with him. How does he and his family resolve the issue by the start of school?
