Girl Scout Community Service Awards My troop is multi-level at this point and I'm doing just fine programming for those at the Junior level, but I have a lot to figure out at the Cadette level. The girls at this age are all about service, so I've been trying to unravel the requirements for the various awards are available. Originally, my troop was going to do the Silver Award the "old" way, but I can't make my girls do four times the work, so we're doing it the "new" way. However, the Cadette Leadership Award (silver torch), which was a part of the "old way," is still worth earning. To earn it, Cadettes must put in 25 total community service hours in a leadership capacity. The catch is that the girls must work for two different organizations or on two different projects, with a minimum of three hours for each. The easiest way to do this is to have a girl do some of her hours outside of Girl Scouts and then complete some leadership hours within the troop. The correlating award for Senior and Ambassadors (gold torch) is similar except that it requires 30 hours of service. There are also a variety of service bars available: Light Blue: for Cadettes; 25 hours of community service to one organization Burgandy: for Seniors/Ambassadors; 25 hours of community service to one organization (can be the same organization served for the light blue/Cadette bar) Green: for Cadettes/Seniors/Ambassadors; service within Girl Scouts (25 hours) The above bars all have a requirement of 4 hours of training and approval by your council; I can't find any mechanism for the latter to happen in my own council, but your mileage may vary. Program Aide Pin: received after completion of Program Aide training PA Patch: for assisting at GS programs after completing Program Aide training (25 hours) Leader in Training Pin: given to Seniors and Ambassadors who have completed the LIT program training Counselor in Training Pin: girl to 10th-12th graders who have completed the CIT program training (for camp counselors) Patches are awarded to LIT- and CIT-trained girls who then apply their learned skills. To earn a LIT patch, a girl must perform 25 hours of service. To earn the CIT patch, a girl must serve as a CIT for a minimum of two weeks at a camp. | Related Articles | Previous Features | Site Map
