Following the Commandments

Guest Author - Amie Borst

Opening song: “I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go” pg 270 Hymnal

Prayer: By invitation

Scripture: “And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.” 1 Nephi 3:7

Quote: “As you open your mind and heart to feel the spirit, the Lord in His own time and in His own way will give you the instructions which will bless your life.” D. Rex Gerratt, “Follow the Instructions,” Liahona, May 2003, 90-91

Lesson: Read the following scriptures; Proverbs 3: 5-6, James 1:5 and 2 Timothy 3:16. How can these scriptures teach us to receive answers? How do they pertain to you and your life?

Read Deiter F. Uchtdorf’s talk, “Heading the Voice of the Prophets,” Liahona, July 2008, 2-5 focusing on the section entitled, “A Consistent Voice.”

Why is it important for us to use the scriptures and the voice of the Prophets as a means to receive instruction in these latter days? Why must we not only listen, but also act upon the word of the Lord?

Song: “Nephi’s Courage” pg 120 Children’s songbook

Activity: Grape Treats

What you’ll need:

Clean, dry grapes (preferably red)

Cream cheese cut into 1 inch cubes

Chopped pecans (walnuts would work too)

Consider the grapes the gospel: perfect, sweet and pure. Now wrap a cube of cream cheese around a single grape, forming it to fit the shape. The cream cheese represents us, our spirits and our earthly sojourn. We can’t force the cream cheese inside the grape, but we can mold the cream cheese around it. Just as with the gospel, we can certainly mold ourselves to fit the standards and teachings within the scriptures. We can shape ourselves to be the kind of person Heavenly Father wants us to become. Now, roll the cream cheese coated grape into the chopped pecans. Think of the pecans as the good works and service we perform. Others can see it, and it changes us for the better just as the pecans add another layer of flavor and texture to the treat. Often the most immediate reward to following the commandments is our sense of self-worth. Enjoy!

Closing song: “How Gentle God’s Commands,” pg 125 Hymnal

Prayer: by invitation
