September 2 2009 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the September 2nd edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here's some anime news that took place since I sent out last week's newsletter:

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced that Shigemi Ikeda, the art director for Afro Samurai: Resurrection is receiving a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation." The award will be presented at the 2009 Creative Arts Awards on Saturday, September 12, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

A.D. Vision, the parent company of ADV Films, has announced it is shutting down after transferring its assets to other companies that will continue its operations. AEsir Holdings acquired selected programming from ADV's film library, in addition to other intellectual property. Section23 Films will acquire account servicing and distribution operations for AEsir's assets. Valkyrie Media Partners has acquired ADV's Anime Network television unit. Seraphim Studios has acquired ADV's Amusement Park Media production unit.

Ponyo falls one spot to #13 at the U.S. box office. The film grossed an estimated $1,958,000 during the August 28-30 weekend, and ticket sales fell 19.3% from the previous weekend. Ponyo is now the fifth highest grossing theatrical anime release in the United States.

All three of these news headlines are being discussed in the BellaOnline Anime forum. There's a link to the forum later in the newsletter if you're interested in participating in any anime discussions. You need to sign up for a forum account to participate, and it doesn't cost anything to sign up for a forum account.

Last week, I published a new ebook through BellaOnline called Anime Reviews Volume 2. This is a companion ebook to Anime Reviews, which I published through BellaOnline last fall. For more information on the ebook, you can click on the link that's provided later in the newsletter.

This week, I posted two new articles to BellaOnline's Anime section. The first is an overview article for Darker Than Black. The other is a review of a book titled Anime Mania: How to Draw Characters for Japanese Animation. Links to both of these articles are included later in the newsletter. I also added words from Darker Than Black to the word list for the Anime word games, and the first season DVD box set of Inuyasha is an Editor's Recommendation on th main Anime page.

Thank you for your support of the BellaOnline Anime site, newsletter, and forum. Be sure to watch your inbox next Wednesday for the September 9th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter.
