Beer Fox Tip of the Week:

"Real Time Hopping" is a hopping technique designed by the Sam Calagione team at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton Delaware. Using Dogfish Head invention, "Randall the Enamel Animal," you can add a dramatically fresh hop profile to your beer at the time you are actually serving it from the tap.

The fancy description of this device is "an organoleptic hop transducer module." It is essentially a 3-foot long pool filter, packed with whole leaf hops. This dynamic little animal is attached to the beer line. Ideally, a high alcohol beer is filtered through the hops, where it grabs the hop oils on the way to the tap faucet, creating a pungent, hop-infused "glass of glory" for hedonistic hopheads. Dogfish Head (DFH) has built over 300 of these crazy animals for breweries and enthusiastic beer lovers throughout the country.

BeerNews:

Scottish & Newcastle, Britain's biggest brewer and the sixth largest producer of beer in the world, has agreed on a joint bid that will split the company holdings between Carlsberg of Denmark and Heineken of Amsterdam. In the deal, Carlsberg will gain full control over Baltic Beverage Holdings (a Russian-based joint venture) with the acquisition of S&N's 50% stake in BBH. In addition, Carlsberg will acquire interests in France, Greece, China and Vietnam.

Heineken acquires S&N's British segment, including Strongbow Cider and John Smith's Beer, as well as its business in Belgium, Portugal, Ireland, the United States and India. In the deal, Scottish & Newcastle was valued at 7.8 billion pounds, an equivalent of 15.44 billion USD.

Hop Stoopid - Sonoma Farmhouse/Lagunitas Brewing, Petaluma, California USA

Style: Imperial/Double IPA

Bright, deep amber body with an off-white head that leaves specks of lacing on the glass like fine latticework. Pow! Hops assert themselves with authority. You feel like a Siberian tiger let loose in a roomful of catnip...roll around in the leaves, dive into the center as if it were the ocean. Grapefruit and lemon citrus seizes your tongue, dressed with a coat of sweet malt and a feathering of peppery spice that rounds out the edges. Fantastic balance in this Imperial IPA makes this a top-rate winner.
