Beer News:

Armand Debelder, brewer/blender at Drie Fontenain, Berseel, Belgium, lost 100,000 bottles of Lambic and gueuze May 23, 2009 when a thermostat malfunctioned. The lambic was subject to temperatures of 50 degrees C, or 122 degrees F. This amounts to one-third of his annual revenue. For enthusiasts of Drie Fontenein, this means that 37.5 cL bottles of gueuze will be scarce this summer.

Not one to be easily discouraged, Debelder has been taking a class in distillation, and hopes to be able to salvage the beer into a marketable liquor. Disposing of the ruined beer is not easily achieved. It would require being trucked to a facility in the Netherlands for environmentally safe disposal.

Craft Beer of the Week Award

Weyerbacher Echo Pale Ale, Weyerbacher Brewing Company, Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
Style: Rye Beer 6.8% ABV

Released as an edition of the Brewers Select Series, this Pale ale is brewed with 30% rye, and displays a golden body and off-white head of dense foam. The nose is fruity with light breadiness.
