Beer Fox Tip of the Week

The next time you visit a museum of ancient artifacts, pay close attention to the drinking vessels. Chances are that you will find antiquities that evidence beer brewing or beer celebrations that are thousands of years old. The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology displays a golden drinking straw, used by the Lady Pu-Abi for consuming beer, as well as an ostrich egg drinking bowl of gold and precious gems. You may also see vessels used for drinking beer, wine and mead, used during the funerary feast for King Midas.

Yebisu Beer Museum in Japan displays artifacts of more recent times, going back only as far as the Meiji Era - around 1887 when Nippon Beer was formed. It still makes for a fun focus on the museum trail.

Beer Fox Laugh of the Week

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Texas, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Minnesota.

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Texas contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."

The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"

The Texas contractor says " we do things differently in Texas- $1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence."

What is it about Boulevard Brewing Company that makes every beer they produce sing on the tongue? This place rocks! Long Strange Tripel is hazy amber with a frothy head of foam that holds esters, releasing them as the sky fairy releases stars as night covers the earth. Aromas of apple, pear, and honeydew, with a tart edge, swim in a dew of sumptuous breadiness. This tastes really fresh, with great balance and a squeeze of bitterness. Spices surround the exterior, while warmth spreads down the throat, barely perceptible, but voluptuous and tender. This is a mighty fine drinker, but be careful! With a 9% ABV, it can sneak up on you quickly...but what a great way to be captured.
