Dear Readers,

As if in response to my recent articles about fishing, the king salmon arrived in our creek this week. Sinona Creek, which runs through our property and right by our screened porch, supports a very small run of King Salmon. And this year, they’ve arrived early. Typically we see the first arrivals around July 1, but as we were milking the goats the other night, my husband heard splashing, so we ran to look into the creek – and a pair of reddish and freckled kings thrashed through the shallow water right past us. Our creek is not all that deep – there are a few deep pools, but for the most part, one can see the bottom. It’s amazing that fish of this size can mange to make it up to spawn. Indeed, for much of the run their backs are well exposed (thus the splashing my husband hears) and their bellies are scooting across the gravel bottom. It’s always a thrill to see them return year after year – I’m sure we’ll be just as excited about it twenty year from now!
