HealthInsite Direct Australia ADD or ADHD Review
There are times when I find websites on the internet that contain valuable information. In the United States, the National Institutes of Health explores many health-related areas. In Australia, HealthInsite, a healthdirect Australia health information service, provides useful information on the internet about various topics. Of special interest is the information about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD). As always, I like to keep readers up to date with useful resources.
The Attention Deficit Disorder section of HealthInsite has two main parts. The first has Systematic Reviews of treatments for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD). There are nine resources in this section. They are research based. The second part of this site shows thirty-four resources that tell about different aspects of ADD/ADHD. These are individual articles.
Systematic Reviews of treatments for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD) show the abstracts for nine different studies about various treatments for ADD/ADHD. The full studies are available by subscription, but you might be able to order them through your local library, if they have an inter-library loan program. I found that the abstracts had value mainly to pique my interest and give me treatment avenues to explore. Most of the studies concluded that more study needs to be completed in order to learn anything definite about the efficacy of the treatments.
Here is a list of the treatments that they reviewed:
* Social skills training for children aged between 5 and 18 with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
* Parent training for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children aged 5 to 18 years
* Acupuncture for ADHD in children and adolescents
* Amphetamines for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in adults
* Meditation therapies for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
* Medications for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children with tics
* Risperidone for ADHD in people with intellectual disabilities
* Amfetamine for ADHD in people with intellectual disabilities
* Homeopathy for ADHD
The resources in the second part of the site include a wide variety of topics. There are several general articles about the symptoms, diagnosis, and management of ADD/ADHD. Specific articles about Attention Deficit Disorder in adults, teenagers, and children are also listed. Different treatments are explored. There are articles about a range of medications and stimulants. Non-drug therapies are also discussed. There is even information about a diet on this site. You might want to see what you think about the "Fail Safe Diet."
Of particular use is the excellent article “The Family Impact of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).” This article contains general information about ADD/ADHD, but it also examines the effect of Attention Deficit Disorder on family relationships. Included is a lengthy section on siblings.
Another worthwhile article is “If your Friend has Attention Deficit Disorder.” In simple terms, the article explains what ADD is and how parents, the school, and friends can help a child with ADD/ADHD. The last bit of the article is a poignant poem called “ADD.” In the poem a child tells what it is like to live with Attention Deficit Disorder. In my opinion, this poem should be required reading for all educational and health care personnel.
Most of the resources on the BellaOnline Attention Deficit Disorder site are from the United States. ADD knows no national boundaries. Sometimes it is good to expand our perspectives, since diverse areas each have their own views of a subject. Some readers might be a bit flummoxed by the subtle variations in the English from the United States and Australia. There are a few differences in spelling and usage. Don’t let them keep you from discovering and enjoying the information from this BellaOnline Website of the Month.
