We meet Grawp in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Grawp is the half-brother of Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. They share the same mother. Their mother is a giantess. After she left Hagrid’s father, she lived with another giant. Grawp is the resulting offspring.
The other giants consider Grawp small. They take pleasure in bullying him. Rubeus Hagrid brings him to live in the Forbidden forest. He does not wish Grawp to be beaten by the other giants. The groundskeeper plans to teach him manners and to speak English. In other words, he plans to civilize the giant.
What the other giants considers a runt, is not! Grawp stands sixteen feet tall. He is tall enough to seize the top of pine trees. His hands are described as the size of an open “beach umbrella.” Grawp, or Grawpy as Hagrid calls him, is strong. He can pull full-grown trees up by the roots. Hagrid wears bruises from Grawp’s punches.
Hagrid’s half-brother’s head is round. It is larger than normal. He has no neck, what so ever. His command of the English language is small, at best. He roars instead of using spoken words. Hagrid wants Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley to visit Grawp once a week and teach him English, after Hagrid leaves Hogwarts. Harry and Hermione agree to help Hagrid, before they knew what their promise entails.
It is Grawp who recuse Harry Potter and Hermione Granger from the centaurs. The centaurs’ arrows hurt and anger Grawpy. Grawp chases the centaurs into the deep, deep forest. Harry and Hermione are left alone in the Forbidden forest. Splatters of Grawp’s blood soak their robes.
