The Poky Little Puppy – Book Review

The Poky Little Puppy – Book Review
Join the five little puppies that dug a hole under the fence and escape out into the wide, wide world.

The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey, illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren

The very first time they sneak out under the fence they roll down the hills, across the meadow and across the bridge and then they stop to count each other. One- two- three- four! Where is number 5? He wasn’t at the top of the hill, and he wasn’t on the bridge. Finally they find him at the bottom of the hill running around and sniffing in the meadow.

“I smell something” he states. “What do you smell?” they ask. “It’s rice pudding!” and they all run home but they get no rice pudding for digging holes under fences!

The next day they dig a different hole, under a different fence and predictably lose the pokiest littlest puppy. This day he smells chocolate custard and they all run home – but they will get no chocolate custard tonight and they are sent to bed.

See what happens the next time they dig a hole under the fence…

Note: All Little Golden Books are from my personal library.

Little Golden Books have been available since 1942. Originally they were produced to make high-quality children’s books affordable to the average American family. They were initially priced at just twenty-five-cents each. These sturdy, colorful books appealed to children and adults alike. They introduced us to new friends such as The Poky Little Puppy , The Tawny Scrawny Lion and The Saggy Baggy Elephant. They celebrated with universal themes such as the need to feel at home in the world while we enjoyed Seven Little Postman and Johnny’s Machines. They helped us understand what might be happening at home The New Baby and Busy Timmy. If you grew up with Little Golden Books you probably loved them all. Share them today with your children and grandchildren and relive the magic.
