Chord Progressions - Walking On Sunshine
Guest Author - David Ø

In this little series we're having a look at some popular chord progressions which are used over and over (and over) again in many popular tunes and songs. If you missed out and would like to start from the beginning here's a handy link to follow. Popular Chord Progressions #1

Here's a song which was recorded by Katrina and the Waves - I think it was their first hit single back in the 80s. It was written by one Kimberly Rew! I just learned that - I thought the band wrote it ... :). This song is what's known in the biz as a 3 chord trick. The original version is in Bb which is a common key for some brass instruments, which are a big part of the song's sound. This key is not so common on the guitar, but as it's only a simple progression it's easy enough to play. You can play it with Barre Chords or I would suggest that you try it with a Capo.

To simplify matters on the guitar, you could just drop the song down the key of A (chords included below). But anyhow here are the original 3 chords needed for the song in Bb.

Verse Bb / / / : Eb / / / : F / / / : Eb / / /

Chorus F / / / : Eb / / / : F / / / : Eb / / / : F / / / : Eb / / / :

If you do play it in A for ease on the guitar, the chords would be A, D and E. Change it to whatever key suits your voice, that's the main item of importance here! Don't forget that you can always change the key to suit your voice on any song.

If you would like to learn all of the chord families, you might be interested in following this link and checking out details of my e-book Basic Chord Families shown over there to the right - it's sub-title? Play 1000s of Songs With These Chords ... and that's true! More classics have been written with these families than you can shake a stick at! (That's musician technical speak that is :).

Basic Chord Families width=150 height=200

Until the next time ... talk 2 ya' ...
