I must admit, I got this book as much because I thought it would help me in my personal life, as I thought it would serve as a resource for articles I write for the Relationships site here at Bella Online. I’m sure, I’m not alone when I say there are people out there who seem to pull you down. I’ve written about it before, and receive questions from my readers about these types of people.
Reading this book helped me to take a closer look at some of the things I do that may contribute to my drawing needy people. And, although it’s not always bad to be a person who cares about others and wants to help them, it can be emotionally draining. Sometimes trying to do too much for a person can be as bad as doing nothing. Thinking a situation will get better on its own just because you want it to, isn’t very realistic either.
I was pleasantly surprised to find in this book, not only ways to recognize the “danger signs” in people who may be “unsafe” to my emotional well-being, but also ways I can change in order to protect myself. This book even shares some of the false solutions people like myself might find themselves doing, in order to fix a problem with another person, or ourselves.
Written by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend is practically a guarantee that the advice they give is sound, based on their wide experience working with relational problems. They combine the experience they have gained as psychologists in their own clinic with sound Biblical advice that will help people have more balanced relationships.
Cloud and Townsend could be called the gurus of relationship advice after their widely acclaimed books in their Boundary series. Their advice has helped me, people I know, and it can help you if you are having been repeating the same relationship problems over and over again.
This may be the first book I’m reviewing by this dynamic duo, but it certainly won’t be the last.
