Is Merck & Co. Responsible?

Even though they knew of the problems with Vioxx since 2000, Merck continued to spend $100 million dollars a year aggressively advertising the drug and putting a positive public relations spin on negative data. A month before the recall, for example, they sent out a press release refuting the heart attack connection, saying “Merck stands behind the efficacy, overall safety and cardiovascular safety of Vioxx.”
