Beer Fox Tip of the Week:

Every beer judge has had moments when he felt his Sense of Smell was highly polished, and others when he wondered if he could smell at all. Many factors affect the way we perceive smell, including the amount of sleep we had, our level of health, the surroundings, and common interferences like the residue from hand soap or scented deodorant.

It helps to train our taste-buds on a regular basis. By doing so, we become acclimated to identifying aromas that may confuse the average person. An easy routine is to infuse cotton balls with the scent of oils and extracts that are a common part of our lives - perfume, peppermint, vanilla and vinegar, cinnamon, lemon oil, orange extract, rum flavoring, and almond extract. Place the individual cotton balls into 35 mm film canisters, and punch a few pinholes in the top. Fill a few canisters with various coffees, spices such as cardamom and coriander, heather, and pepper.

Take your time comparing and contrasting aromas. Give your self breathing room. Try to identify the smells without looking at the labels. Close your eyes and associate each smell with an experience you have had. You will find that your skill at identifying aromas increases markedly with practice, even on bad days.

Iron Hill Brewery is "bailing out" randomly-lucky customers with a custom-designed 'Stimulus Plan." At least five times a week, a table of guests receives a card - rather than a check - announcing they have been 'bailed out" and Iron Hill is picking up the tab. Patrons appreciate the gesture and are taking a more light-hearted view of the challenging economic conditions.

Beerdrinker of the Year Competition - Wynkoop Brewing Company, 1634 18th Street, Denver, Colorado, USA - February 21st, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Beerdrinker of the Year 2008 Matt Venzke of Yorktown, Virginia will hand the crown over to a new winner at the annual competition. Three Finalists, chosen by a panel of experienced beer industry review panel, will compete for the coveted title, free beer for life at Wynkoop Brewing Company, $250 in beer at their home beer bar, BDOTY clothing, and their name engraved on the official trophy. Finalists for the 2009 competition are J Mark Angelus of Nehalem, Oregon, Cody Christman of Denver, Colorado, and Phil Farrell of Cummings, Georgia. Farrell is hoping his famous rubber chicken will bring him luck in this year's contest!

Style: Barrel Aged Rye Beer - 9% ABV

A dark amber body glistens as she shows off her head, the color of light brown sugar. Her nose is bready and sweet, inviting you to dive into pleasure. Four rye malts are blended with Centennial and Crystal Hops; then partially fermented in whiskey barrels before final blending.
