Beer Fox Tip of the Week
Although most beer drinkers focus on the grain bill or hops used as the foundation of the beer they are drinking, the yeast is the star of the show. In German hefeweizen, yeast can impart aromas and flavors of banana, clove, smoke, bubblegum, and vanilla - and remains in the bottle as a hazy reminder of its wonderful work.
Ale yeasts can produce aromas of fruity esters and spice, while lager yeast, when treated correctly, allow malt depth and aromatics to shine through. Those responsible for wild fermentation add complexity that makes beer sing.
As yeast consumes sugar, their aromatics are complex and unlimited. They may fill the air with aromas of dark fruits - plums, raisins and figs - or the lighter fruits of peaches, oranges, apples, and pears. In some, you may detect aromas of lemongrass, butterscotch, exotic spices, leather, earth, and horse blanket.
Beer Fox Laugh of the Week
An Irishman goes into the confessional box after years of being away from the Church.
There's a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap. On the other wall is a dazzling array of the finest cigars and chocolates.
Then the priest comes in. "Father, forgive me, for it's been a very long time since I've been to confession, but I must first admit that the confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be."
The priest replies: "Get out. You're on my side."
Beer News:
A Pennsylvania (USA) beer & fitness group, Fishtown Beer Runners, located in Philadelphia, have scheduled a Liquor Law Reform Run for Thursday, March 25th at 7:00 pm. Co-founder David April organized the run to highlight the need for the Pennsylvania State Legislature to reform the antiquated Pennsylvania liquor laws. They will be running to Local 44, one of the bars raided for selling unregistered beer. It is a 6.5 mile run from the starting point at 2346 E. Susquehanna Ave and all are encouraged to participate even if they can't run the entire route from Fishtown. We will be running west on Market Street for most of the run and folks can jump in anywhere along the route, or take the El to City Hall and run from there.
The group celebrates "responsible running and drinking in the interest of science," and sets out on weekly runs that average 3-5 miles, every Thursday at 7:00 pm sharp, regardless of the weather. The run begins at 2346 E. Susquehanna Ave (David April's home) in Fishtown and ends at a different pub every week, where members replenish with "a beer or two." Membership is free. Walkers are encouraged to join.

Craft Beer of the Week Award
Roadrunner IPA - Blue Corn Brewery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
Style: India Pale Ale - 6.5% ABV
Poured into my crystal clear glass, the body shone golden-amber with the slightest hazy glow and a creamy lean head of foamy eggshell white. Aromas are fully fragrant citrus and snappy whiffs of pine and spice. Malt lends a firm foundation, but allows the hops to emerge in perfect balance. Hops used include: CTZ (a moniker for Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus - they are the same hop varietal), Centennial, Amarillo and Cascade. Roadrunner is then dry-hopped with Columbus, Centennial, and Amarillo. Applause must be given to Brewer Brad Kraus for creating this seductive, highly-drinkable, quenching beer!
Cheers!
