Dear Readers,
One of the pleasures of living in rural Alaska is having critters wander through our “yard.” We have a couple of local moose cows, both with single calves, feeding in the area this winter. In past years, we’ve had a moose cow wander up the creek with her newly born calf following on wobbly legs. They don’t seem to mind the barking dogs; the dogs sure do mind them, however! I’ve been fortunate so far – all the moose I’ve encountered while out on the trails with my dogs have been of the peaceful variety. Some people are not so fortunate – many mushers carry rifles in their sleds in case they get attacked by a moose. Yes – a moose. Not a bear or wolf. Moose are among the most unpredictable wildlife we encounter.
I hope you’ll enjoy this week’s article about moose. There’s a second accompanying article with a few pictures I’ve taken over the years.

I’m heading to Nome on Monday to watch the All Alaska Sweepstakes, which I wrote about last week. I hope to have some photos to share when I get back, as well as first hand information about Nome. So keep checking back at alaska.bellaonline.com for the latest content about Alaska!
